The media days session finally got started at around 10:15 with the showing to the media of a video about what the officiating “points of emphasis” will be for the 2008 college football season. There are three main points of emphasis, including: 1) targeting a defenseless player; 2) horse-collar tackling; and 3) unsportsmanlike conduct.
Badger fans will be familiar with the first play shown in the “targeting a defenseless player” portion of the video. It was the violent collision involving then UW freshman receiver Kyle Jefferson during last season’s Michigan State game.
Well, Illinois’ Ron Zook started things off here by addressing the group of non-television media at 10:30. He was followed by Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald and then Coach Bielema at 11 a.m. Both the Big Ten Network and ESPN News are carrying these sessions live, so tune in if you get the chance. In addition, the Big Ten Network's Web site is live video-streaming (and archiving) the coaches comments.
At around 11:30, Coach Bielema and our three student-athletes started their session with the TV media. There are eight or 10 different locations, with three TV stations each. The coaches and student-athletes rotate around to each location answering a variety of questions (and many of the same ones).
Should mention that Andy Kemp looks sharp in roommate Jake Bscherer’s suit. By the way, we’ve entrusted Andy with a video camera to document some of this trip, so look for that in the coming days.
