Another NU point after a long rally. Almost went out of bounds but NU did everything in its power to keep it in and pull within three. Again, the Wildcats are doing everything possible to keep the ball in bounds but Jeffers finishes that with a kill. Just one more and the Badgers can get out of here. Another NU point...still at match point . Wack with a hit, NU tried to block but it went out of bounds and that will do it, 25-21, Badgers win the third and final set.
Make sure you come out to the UW Field House Friday to see all the Badger volleyball action and the great costumes that are sure to be on display. Have a great night!
The Badgers are really taking control of this third set...leading 20-12 right now with Ohlander serving. Have to give Northwestern credit...they are definitely staying in it with their energy, especially on the sidelines. Brittney is finding her swing again...another kill for her and we're two away from set/match point.
Northwestern starting a late rally...we're at 23-18 right now. They've scored three-straight. Make that four-straight with a block. Badgers take a timeout.
Another ace for the Badgers...Kim's turn. Good to see the Badgers finding their stride at the service line. Why not make it two in a row for Kim, she gets another. Wisconsin is up 15-9 right now...don't want to jinx it but I think they're in good shape to snap this four-match losing streak.
And we're started the third set. Northwestern gets out to a quick 1-0 lead. Badgers use a service ace to go up 4-2...Ohlander with the ace she already has three kills this set. Another ace for the Badgers...this time it's Brittney...make that two aces in a row for Brittney. Timeout for NU. Brittney has three aces tonight.
Wisconsin takes the second set, 25-19. We'll be back in a bit to start the third.
The Badgers are coming alive tonight...Caity DuPont just threw down a big kill. We're trying to get the fans into it up here with another timeout. Elle has seven kills and so does Brittney. Brittani Gray leads Northwestern with six kills.
I'm in need of a creative Halloween costume...anyone have any suggestions??
Northwestern is doing a good job of climbing back into sets. They just tied the score with a service aces but thankfully, the Badgers are the ones to take the lead back. Caity DuPont just entered the game for Allison Wack. Almost a scary scene...Kim dove for a dig was still on the ground and Elle tripped on her...thankfully they're both OK but their egos my be bruised a little bit since the fall was on national TV.
The curse of the service ace/net serve just hit Northwestern. After a few exchanges Northwestern has tied the score at eight. Big kill by Brittney to put the Badgers back up. Big block by Northwestern and their fans really got into that one. We're tied again at 10. Northwestern has been hitting a lot of balls into the net...good for Wisconsin. UW up 13-11.
And there's a little bit of hockey in the house tonight. Phil (I think that's his name?) is in the audience with his signs. Just did the "One, we want more" chant.
Start of the second set and Ohlander gets on the board again with a kill. I think the Block Party has a new cheer/gesture for Elle. They have been making an "O" with their arms, much like they do at football games, when she serves.
Badgers are out to a 6-4 lead in the second set with Northwestern serving.
And somehow we're tied at 19. Coach Waite takes a timeout. Wisconsin gets back on top after two kills and we're at 21-19. We've had a lot of timeouts in this first set...Northwestern takes another one.
Elle Ohlander just recorded her fifth kill tonight...she and Brittney are leading the Badgers with five each.
And that's more like it...Wisconsin takes the first set, 25-20.
Northwestern has scored three-straight to pull within one but Dolgner ended the rally with a kill. We're back at 16-14. Another timeout called by Northwestern.
As a reminder, if you're coming out to the Field House Friday you better be wearing your Halloween costumes! If you wear your costumes, you receive free admission to the match against Michigan State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Creativity is a must...may be hard to top the Milwaukee Brewers' Sausages we saw here a few years ago.
Big solo block by Elle Ohlander. If you have the height, might as well take advantage of it. Ohlander is having a pretty good set. Just recorded a big kill to keep the Badgers up 14-11. Make that two. Badgers up 15-11 and NU takes a timeout.
Janelle Gabrielsen now in for Katherine Dykstra to serve. Badgers have the 4-3 advantage early in the first set and are really playing well together tonight. Brittney is doing a good job of somehow managing to slightly hit a Northwestern player as the ball goes out of bounds. She's done that twice now and just recorded a service ace. We're at 7-6 now in favor of Wisconsin...net serve for NU, 8-6.
And we are just about ready to start. Head coach Pete Waite is going back to the 5-1 offense tonight. Starters are Nikki Klingsporn, Brittney Dolgner, Katherine Dykstra, Allison Wack, Audra Jeffers, Elle Ohlander and the libero Kim Kuzma.
Not a huge crowd here tonight but still can get pretty loud thanks to the band and fans.
Hello again and welcome back to the Volleyball Blog! We're back in action at the UW Field House for this Wednesday night match against Northwestern. Just under 40 minutes before first serve and both teams are on the court warming up.
I figured I'd add a random note today...for those of you that have been to a volleyball match and are wondering what that music is they play during warm ups I'll try to name off a few songs for you...at least the ones I know. Warn-ups begin with "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC and then it transitions into "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph. Not sure about the next song but right now we've got "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"...always a classic.
Just in case you want to update your iPods, that's what the Badgers are listening to before the match.
I'll check back with more in a bit. If you're not doing anything tonight, prime opportunity to come down to the UW Field House. If you're not in Madison, make sure to tune into the Big Ten Network since the match will air live tonight.
