Jacqueline Boscacci:  Welcome Badger fans, we are live from the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) about to kick off the second game of the series against No. 3 Minnesota Duluth. The Badgers suffered their first loss of the season snapping a 20-game unbeaten streak.

2:35
Expand

2:36
Jacqueline Boscacci:  The Badgers were in their usual good spirits during stretching pre-game. Like team captain Erika Lawler said, "It's a new day!"

2:39

2:40
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Both teams are on the ice for warm ups, approx. 26 minutes until face-off.

2:46
Jacqueline Boscacci:  My name is Jacqueline, and it's my first year with the women's hockey team and only my second time blogging. With that said, I welcome all comments and suggestions and I will do my best to give you the information you want.

I also forgot to mention in yesterday's blog a happy birthday to Kelly Nash who celebrated her birthday on Friday with a 5 1/2 hour bus ride to Duluth.

2:54
Jacqueline Boscacci:  In pre-game meal coach Koch and Cornell, who are stepping in while Johnson was overseas with the U.S. U18 team, had three keys to the game.
- Play hard for 60 minutes
- Win the 50/50 battles
- Play smart with the puck, basically have a purpose

2:57
Jacqueline Boscacci:  I also think a key to todays game is coming out strong and scoring first. UMD held Wisconsin without a shot for the first 11 minutes of regulation.

3:02
[Comment From Adam]
Wisconsin also needs to figure out a way to score on the power play at this rink. UW has not scored on 19 straight power-play opportunities against UMD at the DECC, including the 0-for-7 performance last night. Changing that could go a long way to earning the split today.

3:03
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Starting line-up are being announced, about 4 min. to faceoff. The lines are the same as yesterday

3:03
[Comment From WI IM]
On the topic of pre-game, were there any changes to the normal traditions yesterday or today that could/may not energize the team?

3:06
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Everything was pretty much the same, although Haverstock's pre-game performance wasn't the best of the season. Before every game the team chooses someone to sing and Haverstock went with Barney's "I love you"

3:06
Jacqueline Boscacci:  But we are about ready to go and if the game was anything like yesterday I bet it will be physical.

3:07
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UMD wins the faceoff

3:08
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Fridfinnson got off the first shot of the game but Vetter was there.

3:08
Expand

3:09
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Speaking of Vetter, she was ready to go today, this shot before warm ups.

3:09
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UMD has possession in UW's zoneand they are up against the boards for some time

3:10
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Giles with a clear lane hits a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle and skims the post

3:12
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UMD's passing is effective and Fridfinnson gets another shot off.

3:12
Jacqueline Boscacci:  15:29 left in the first 0-0

3:12
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Keseley for hooking, UMD PP

3:13
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UMD is passing on the outside and trying to get in inside, a shot came close to in, but Vetter made the adjustment and stopped it

3:14
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Badgers are clogging the middle to get some blocked shots.

3:15
Jacqueline Boscacci:  The Badgers were successful on the kill

3:16
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Tuominen took a shot from inside the slot, Vetter with a glove save

3:16
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UW's first PP coming up

3:16
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Fridfinnson for interference

3:17
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Duggan with a slap shot off Martins blocker

3:18
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Lawler from Keseley tried to stuff it in, but it went wide

3:18
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Both teams at full strength

3:19
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Both are 0-1 on the PP so far. 9:30 left

3:20
Jacqueline Boscacci:  UMD keeps trying to stuff it in from the corner of the crease but haven't finished yet, Vetter has seven saves already

3:21
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Vetter went down to cover the puck, but it went by and it was a close call for UW, but it deflected wide

3:22
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Haverstock with a mean slapper from the top of the left faceoff circle, sounded like it came off the facemask of Martin

3:22
[Comment From Steven]
Are the Badgers playing with more intensity today after the loss?

3:23
Jacqueline Boscacci:  I would say yes, for one thing they are getting shots off and they have held possession longer today

3:24
Jacqueline Boscacci:  6 min. left in the first, vetter with another good save

3:24
Jacqueline Boscacci:  SOG 9-5 UMD

3:34
[Comment From Mark]
Happy Birthday Goal by Kelly!!!

3:34
Jacqueline Boscacci:  End of first period - UW 1, UMD 0

3:35
Jacqueline Boscacci:  That was Kelly's sixth goal of the season

3:38
[Comment From WI IM]
Does Kelly's goal in the tie shoot out (against UMD? at the Kohl) count as a goal for statistics?

3:39
Jacqueline Boscacci:  No it does not, but there is a seperate stat column for shootouts, she is the only Badger to score in the two shootouts we have had this season

3:43
Jacqueline Boscacci:  During the intermission a young girl is showing off her fiure skating skills... Very impressive

3:45
Jacqueline Boscacci:  I should also mention the crowd is a bit smaller today but I can only see half of the arena. More noticeably the UMD band is not here, which definitely added to the atmosphere last night. UMD has a very loud, vocal crowd and the band was a big reason for that

3:48
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Here we go for the second

3:49

Is Mark Johnson there to coach or is he still away?

4:30
Jacqueline Boscacci:  Coach Johnson is not here, I believe he is currently traveling back Madison.

4:31
