Welcome to the (almost) courtside blog at Penn State. I'm actually sitting in the media area towards the top of the lower bowl here at the Bryce Jordan Center. Still at midcourt though, so I can't complain.
1:31
Before we get into the particulars for today's game, I'll start off with a little photo diary of yesterday's practice.
1:32
Below is photo of Coach Ryan's kids Matt (video coordinator) and Brenna putting the "Seat Upgrade" recliners to good use during practice. It's a tough life.

1:34
Funny story from practice. Howard Moore, one of the assistant coaches, was looking around the arena as the team was warming up for practice and noticed a person in the Arena sound booth. He was curious who it was and whether or not the team had to worry about them watching our practice.
So I walked up to the booth to check it out and there was a definitely a head in the booth watching practice. As you can see below, we didn't have too much to worry about.

Yep... that's a cardboard cutout of Penn State's leading scorer Talor Battle on  a stick taped to the table. Pretty amusing.
1:37
Below is a picture of the team getting set for possessions during practice. Coach Gary Close is going over the  report with the scout team in white while Coach Ryan gets the  rest of the guys ready for  how they're going to attack Penn State.

Ryan Evans (with the ball) and the rest of the scout team simulate Penn State's offense. Ryan, Brett Valentyn, Q Smith and the guys really had fun immitating the Nittany Lions "in-bounds, in-range" style of offense.

1:43
Coach Ryan has a ton of friends here for today's game. He's got people from his hometown, high school, Wilkes College, you name it. They're expecting the biggest crowd of the year for a PSU hoops game, but there will be a decent number of Red Heads behind the Badgers bench. Lots of "I'm a Bo-liever" t-shirts in the bunch.
This photo below doesn't do it justice, but a good portion of the Coach Ryan friends and family section came to practice Saturday night.

And now for perhaps the most important photos of the day... Coach Ryan got his photo taken with the Phillies 2008 World Series Trophy. The hardware is on a Trophy Tour and its sitting in the concourse for fans to see today.
Here is a shot of Coach Ryan and his son Matt. (Coach brought the  "Fightin Phils" towel with him from  home.

Now that we got all that covered, we're just about ready for the main event... Wisconsin basketball at Penn State.
1:52
I'll set the stage quick...
Wisconsin ended its six-game losing streak Thursday with a convincing 63-50 win over Illinois. The Badgers are 13-9 and 4-6 in the Big Ten. They currently sit in ninth place, but are just two games out of third place. Lots of ball to be played yet.
1:53

Penn State has won four of its last five games including a shocking win at Michigan State. Most recently though, the Lions lost by 20 points at Michigan on Thursday. They sit  tied for  third in the Big Ten with a 6-4 record, 17-6 overall.

1:56
We've got a semi-white out here in the Arena. They are celebrating Coaches vs. Cancer and asked fans to "White out Cancer," but only some got the message apparently.
The students got here early and have lined the court along one side (opposite the benches). They look they'll be pretty into it. Traditionally I'm told they don't get great crowds here for hoops and usually curtain off portions of the upper deck. Not today... they're hoping for near capacity today.
With less than five minutes on the clock, they've got a  decent way to go to fill it up. I'd guess we'll have over 12,000 though. Not too bad.
1:59
The refs just walked onto the court (Ted Hillary, Donnee Gray and Reggie Greenwood) and were greeted by five students standing courtside with ref outfits on. They waved at each other and wished each other a good game.
2:04
Intros are underway and we're about to get started.
Jon Leuer is making the start for Keaton Nankivil again tonight. (Although the PA just announced Keaton as Jon ran out)
2:08
Landry wins the opening tip and gets it started with a jump hook in the lane GOOD.. 2-0 lead for Bucky!
2:09
Hughes guarding Pringle, J-Bo on Battle and Landry on Cornley right now.
Battle airballs his first shot of the game.. .a deep 3 from the wing.
2:09

Leuer with a great drive, but can't get the shot to fall... PSU jacks up a quick one and it misses. UW boards.

2:10
Hughes airballs his first shot attempt, but Landry is all under the hoop to grab it and put it back. 4-0 Bucky.
2:11
Pringle misses a short one and Joe rebounds. PSU is not wasting any time shooting and UW is being methodical. UW misfires and Jeff Brooks scores on the other end with a 2 in the lane.
2:11
Landry with a great feed to a cutting Leuer for 2. Great execution there. UW up 6-2
2:12
UW nearly gets a steal, but as Landry tries to save it, it goes to Pringle who scores in the lane. 6-4
2:12
[Comment From Jasper]
Has Nankivil started all season?
2:13

Yes, Keaton started 20 of the first 22 for UW. I think he's gonna play today though. Leuer got the start, but Keaton practiced last night and looked okay. He's recovering from a left ankle injury.

2:14

Hughes drives to the rim and gets hammered Andrew Jones (not the former Braves outfielder). He'll go to the line as that's the first foul called in the game. It also brings us to the first media timeout.

2:16
Jordan Taylor and Kevin Gullikson enter for J-Bo and Leuer.
Hughes at the line and he hits the first... and the second.
2:16
Kevin on Cornely now, Hughes on Battle and Taylor on Pringle.
Jones cuts and scores for PSU.
2:18
Taylor swings it to Krabbenhoft and he misses a 3-pointer from the wing. On the other end Cornely pulls up for a long two and drains it. Tie game 8-8.
2:19
Leuer back in for Landry now.
Taylor can't get a short one to go, but Leuer rebounds. Over to Gullikson and he misses a 17-foot jumper. Joe gets called for a foul going for the board.

PJ Jackson scores a jumper and PSU has a 10-8 lead.
2:20
Jarmusz enters for Joe. Leuer misses a baseline jumper, but Gullikson tips it... no good. UW is crashing the boards against a smaller PSU team, but doesn't have much to show for it yet.
2:21
Jarmusz pump fakes in the corner, one dribble shoots and it's good. 10-10 with 11:15 left.
2:23
Cornley swishes a jumper from the wing and Hughes gets called for an offensive foul at the other end trying to get to the basket.

2:26
Hughes tries a floater in the lane and gets it blocked, but PSU misses a 3 and Leuer boards.
J-Bo with a lay-up basket for UW... nice play. Tied at 12-12
2:27
Battle misses a 3-pointer and PSU gets whistled for an over the back foul on the rebound. 2 team fouls for each team.
2:27
Make that three team fouls for UW as Landry gets called for a moving screen. Landry comes out.
2:27
[Comment From Jack Gray UW 1954 (Pharm)]
Enjoying from TN. Good to see Trevon sink 2 in a row. No TV here. Say "Hi" to Otto.
2:28
Battle gets a feed from Cornley down low and scores a lay-up. Role reversal there. PSU up two.
2:28
Leuer with a great spin move in the low block and finish off the glass for two. Big-time play with the shot clock running down... he has four points.
2:30
Battle is forced to float an off-balanced shot from the lane as the shot clock is about to expire and it airballs. The ball will go back to UW.

Man-to-man full court pressure from PSU now... UW handles no problem.
2:33
Leuer with a tough turn-around jump hook... he's making some play early on. UW leads 16-14
2:33
Jeff Brooks answers with a 2-pt jumper for PSU. Tie game
2:34
Battle blocks J-Bo's 3-point try and then gets the ball on a run out and scores a lay-up. Tough turn of events there for UW... can't give up cheapies.
2:34
Then Joe gets it underneath and gets blocked by Cornley. Ball goes OB off UW.

Who thinks will go dancing this year?
2:36
PSU misses, but UW turns it over on offense.
Back at the other end Pringle will head to the line after a foul on Taylor. He sinks both and PSU is up 20-16. Biggest lead for the Lions.
2:37
Keaton gets his first action.
Jarmusz gets the game's first triple with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. 20-19 PSU lead.
2:37
Pringle tries to split Landry and Taylor on offense with a behind the back dribble... he loses control out of bounds back to UW.
2:39
Nankivil isn't shy as he fires a long two... is rims out. PSU fires back and misses also.
UW works the ball around and Landry gets it in the post. He double-pumps and draws contact. Shots is no good, but he'll go to the line for two.

Badger alum here.  I live in Santa Barbara, CA, and it was warmer in Madison yesterday than it was here.  Talk about irony.
2:40
It's nice and warm here in State College, Pa. too. Nice and warm being around 50... everything is relative I guess.
2:41

Stat check: Leuer leads UW with 6 points and Jarmusz has 5. PSU has four different players with four points.

2:42
Landry knocks down the first free throw to tie the game and rattles home the second. UW regains the lead at 21-20.
2:42
[Comment From GA Badger]
Badgers need at to at least finish .500 in the Big Ten and win one tourny game then they will get there invite...If not NIT...
2:43
Battle out now for PSU, but Pringle is in and takes it to the rack.. he misses though and Leuer rebounds. On the other end Leuer can't get it to fall and PSU comes away.
2:44
Another quick shot from PSU misses and UW secures. Tim in the lane with a mini hook/runner is GOOD. UW up 23-20 under 2:00 left.
2:44
Leuer gets called for his 1st foul, sending Jones to the line for two shots.
UW has 5 team fouls and PSU has 3 team fouls.
2:45
Battle re-enters as Jones misses the first... he hits the second though.
UW leads 23-21.
2:45
Landry in the post absorbs contact... no call and misses a turn-around. PSU boards with 1:10 left.
2:46
Battle out top on Hughes and he gets called for a bump. That's two on Pop and he'll sit out the final minute. Ball out underneath.
2:46
Battle fires up a 3 off the in-bounds and it misses... J-Bo nails a trey for UW at the other end! UW up 26-21 with 45 seconds left.
2:47
Pringle shoots and misses and Jones gets called for a loose ball foul challenging for the ball. UW will have it after a 30 second timeout.

Much appreciated!
2:49
Taylor rubs off a Leuer screen, then feeds the big man in the post. He backs down his man, gets him off balance, then turns and scores two! Just 2.4 left on the clock and PSU can only get a Pringle full-court heave off... no good.
UW leads 28-21 at the break!
2:52
Badgers close the half with a 12-1 run over the final five minutes to open up the game's biggest cusion. UW held the Nittany Lions without a field goal for the final 6:01 of the half. Good half for UW on both ends of the court.

could you tell me once again how buckey has done with a half time lead
3:04
UW is 13-3 this year with a halftime lead. 148-12 under Bo Ryan.
Let's no go jinxing anything though!
3:05

UW shot 40.7% and PSU shot 39.1%

UW out-rebounded PSU 17-12 and 4-0 on the offensive glass.

3:06
Leuer with 8, Jarmusz with 7, Landry with 6 and J-Bo 5
Cornley, Brooks, Pringle and Battle all have 4 points for PSU
3:06
PSU will start with it and get a lay-up off a curl from Pringle. 28-23 UW
3:07
Hughes with a great fake shot, pass to Leuer wide open for a DUNK in the lane! 30-23 UW leads.
3:07
Pringle gets the rim again, this time scores it AND gets fouled by Leuer. Gotta shut down the lane to the basket this half. He hits the FT and UW leads 30-26 now.
3:08
Hughes misses a fall-away, but Battle misses a pull-up 3-pointer off a run-out on the other end. UW controls.
3:10

Hughes penetrates a PSU zone and finds Landry open under the hoop for an easy two. Two nice drive and dishes for Hughes this half.
Cornely misses a 3-pointer and the ball is OB to UW. 32-26 UW lead.

3:10

PSU quickly goes back to man-to-man. They tried the zone for one possession, Hughes beat it and now they're back to man.
Landry in the post... he's fouled. He'll shoot two. Andrew Jones has three fouls now for PSU.

3:11
Landry misses off the back iron on the first and same for the second. Gotta get those. UW 4-for-6 at the line tonight.
3:12
Cornely barrels over Landry, no call, but he throws it away to UW. Landry still down after that contact. Cornley lowered the shoulder and knocked Marcus over, but it looks like Marcus is okay. He'll sit for a minute though (Kevin in).
3:12
UW up 32-26 with the ball.
3:13
Leuer gets the ball low, makes a post move and gets called for a travel. That's UW's four TO of the day only.
3:13
Jones works on Leuer in the post and gets a baby-hook to fall. 32-28 now UW with 15:40 left.
3:14
UW misses, a tip-in misses, but Pringle gets called for a foul on the third try. The foul was on the floor and UW will have it under the hoop with a fresh 35. Timeout

Krabby played 11 minutes of the first half and the first 4:26 of half two. He had one rebound and one block in the first half.
3:15
[Comment From apache jct badger]
hughes this and last game is really playing his role
3:16
Yeah... I agree. Pop didn't score against Illinois but played a great floor game. The same can be said for today so far. He's taking what is given to him and making his teammates better.
3:18
Hughes misses a 3-pointer from the top coming out of the timeout. Shot clock was running down and he had to take it. PSU misses and UW rebounds to regain control.
3:18
Leuer with a DUNK and UW is up 34-28!
3:19
He sealed his man perfectly, took a great pass from Taylor I think and flushed it.
DJ Jackson swishes a long two for PSU to keep them within four, 34-30.
3:19
Pop makes a great hesitation move, gets the rim, but can't finish. That would have been sweet, instead PSU boards and Leuer picks up a foul on defense trying to block Jones. Jones will shoot two FTs.
3:20

Jones hits both and cuts it to two.
UW up 34-32 with 12:58 left.
Landry re-enters... he's fine.

3:20
The crowd is into it now for maybe the first time today. Students are jumping and waving white towels. Still not all that loud.
3:21
Joe silences them with a nice running one-hander off the glass. 36-32 UW lead.
3:21
Ott misses down low for PSU and UW boards. They feed Marcus and he misses a turn-around jumper. PSU ball.
3:23
Cornley gets stripped in the lane and J-Bo comes away with it. Ball down low to Marcus and he gets fouled on the way up... ball rolls off the rime. A 3-point play would have been nice there. Instead he'll shoot two. Timeout

3:24

Leuer has definitely stepped up. I think he was coming off the bench because Coach Ryan liked having a scorer on the bench to go to. A spark off the bench so to speak. He's looked good as a starter though too.

Grrr... Marcus misses both FTs. Tough to let those chances go by.
Battle misses a DEEP 3-point try at the other end and UW rebounds.
3:27
Taylor gets called for a travel though handing the ball back to PSU. Defense needs to dig deep and keep PSU in check during this mini-dry spell.
3:28
Tim gets called a non-shooting foul. Battle misses a driving lay-up and Marcus boards. Good D again, making it tough.
3:28
Tim misses a 3-pointer from the corner and then Pringle fires a 3-pointer off the backboard from the corner for PSU. Tough to do that.

Battle rebounds though and gets fouled going up. He'll shoot two.
3:28
[Comment From tom-fl]
good to hear from all the other out of wi people llistening in.
3:29
Battle hits both and its 36-34 UW lead with under 10 left.
3:30

PSU back to a 2-3 zone and Hughes misses a late three. PSU turns it back over though and UW will go to Landry in the post for two. That quiets the crowd and puts UW back up 4 at 38-34 with 8:42 left.

3:31
Hughes almost picks the pocket of Pringle... ball goes OB though. Almost a great theft and run-out.
3:31
Morrissey is long on a 15-foot jumper, but PSU rebounds and resets.
3:32
PSU didn't have a first-half offensive board, but is doing better in that dept. this half. Cornley gets it in low, pump fakes on Leuer and draws a foul. That's Leuer's fourth... trouble.
He'll sit.
3:33
Cornely misses the first and the second too. Joe rebounds. Whew.
3:34
J-Bo misses a 3-point shot from the wing, but Joe skies for the offensive board and gets fouled by Pringle. The foul is on the floor and UW will have it OB after this timeout.

Krabby with a block, but ball stays with PSU with 10 on the shot clock.
3:38
Wow... Hughes with GREAT defense one on one with Battle. One of the quickest guys in the league and Hughes locked him up, forced a terribly hard shot in the lane that missed almost everything. The ball went OB off a UW player with 0:01 on the shot clock. PSU calls a timeout to call a play.
3:39
Battle catches off the in-bounds and throws up an airball from the corner. Shot clock violation.
3:40
Pop misses a deep three as the shot clock expires, but he runs down the long rebound and a fresh 35.
3:40
Pop gets in the lane and kicks it out to J-Bo in the corner... SWISH... for three! Crowd wanted a travel.. no dice. UW leads 43-34 with 5:00 left.
