Spring Football Game(04/18/2009)
1:38
Good afternoon, Badger fans. Welcome to the 2009 Badger football spring game blog. Temps are in the high sixties, although we've got some clouds rolling in and are expecting some rain later in the afternoon. Can't complain, though.

Quick format explanation for the game today ... it's starters vs. the rest of the team (ones vs. the world, as Coach Bielema calls it). The non-starters' points will count double. Pretty simple.
1:39
[Comment From scott]
Who are the frontrunners that will be the starters on offence and Defense when the season starts in the fall?
1:40
We're expecting that the coaching staff will release a depth chart in the days following today's game. Could be a week or so, but check back at UWBadgers.com.
1:45
[Comment From Mark]

1:45
It should be up soon.
1:48
[Comment From Matt]
How many rep can we expect Jon Budmayr to get in today's scrimmage?
1:49
Dustin Sherer, Scott Tolzien and Curt Phillips are expected to get reps with the ones for sure, but those three and Jon Budmayr are all expected to get an equal number of reps.
1:49

Did you say there is a video link? if so, where can that be found?
1:58
Link is on the front page of our web site, sort of upper right.
1:59
About 5 minutes till kick ...
2:02
[Comment From Bill]
How does the size of our defensive line and linebackers compare with the top defenses in the Big Ten?
2:04
Not sure I can answer that without seeing what everyone else has. Plus, I know we have freshmen coming in the fall who may or may not be in the mix, so tough to say at this point.
2:04
The team has just entered the stadium with U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" filling the air.
2:08
White has won the toss and will start on offense. They'll have the ball 1st and 10 at their own 30. Scott Tolzien at QB.
2:08
Tolzien to TJ Williams for a 21-yard completion.
2:10
Tolzien's pass to Korslin incomplete with good coverage by Jaevery McFadden. 3rd and 3 for the white at the Red 42.
2:10
Does everyone see the live stream???
2:11
Tolzien to Korslin over the middle for a first down at the 40.
2:13
Link to the video is at the right of the main photo on the front page of the web site. It says Live Stream Available Here.
2:13
Welch attempting a 51-yard FG that falls just short. Red offense takes over at its own 34 yard line with 8:45 left in the first quarter.
2:15
Dustin Sherer in at QB for the Red team. Gives to John Clay, who picks up close to 10 yards but it's called back due to holding. Took about six guys to bring Clay down.
2:17
Sherer incomplete over the middle, intended for Graham. Add a 10-yard holding penalty to that play and its 2nd and 29.
2:17
Sherer tries to hit Nick Toon down the far sideline, but it's incomplete. 3rd and 29.
2:18
Sherer to Toon for a first down over the middle. 38-yard completion. 1st and 10 at the White 47.
2:18
[Comment From Brian]
I'll give Sherer credit, he's throwing much better and standing tall in the pocket.
2:19
Sherer hits Kyle Jefferson for a gain of 18 yards. 1st and 10 at the White 27.
2:20
Clay has run hard thus far. Picks up eight yards to set up 2nd and 2.
2:21
Zach Brown replaces Clay. Zach's first appearance of the day. He picks up five.
2:22
A little play action and Dustin hits Graham in the right corner of the end zone for a 12-yard TD pass. Welch's conversion is good. 7-0 Red.
2:22
[Comment From Brian]
Easy, easy touchdown
2:23
White taking over again at its own 30. Tolzien still at the controls.
2:24

2:28
LB Tony Megna has just intercepted a Sherer pass and returned it 24 yards for a TD. Double points for the White team, so its 14-7 White.
2:29
Red back at it on offense. Brown for five yards.
2:31
[Comment From badger dave]
Johnson and Hubbard hitting hard
2:32

2:32
Sherer fires a strike to Toon for another first down at the White 32. 16-yard completion.

End of the first quarter. White 14, Red 7.
2:35
Trevon Hughes of the men's hoops team is being introduced here in the stadium for making the shot vs. Florida State that was named Pontiac's Game-Changing Play of the NCAA Tournament. UW Athletics gave $1,000 to five randomly chosen UW students from the winnings from Pontiac.
2:37
We've stopped play for a little while as the kickers -- Welch and Hughes -- kick a few field goals. Each kicker is attempting four field goals, worth a point each in the game today. Welch made all four, Hughes made three. The score is now White 17, Red 11.
2:38
Back to the action. Sherer incomplete intended for Gilreath.
2:39
Schofield with a TFL on Zach Brown.
2:40
Sherer hits Brown over the middle for 10 yards. 4th and 1.
2:40
[Comment From Brian K.]
Shouldn't White have gotten 6 points for the 3 extra points?
2:41
It was a "rapid-fire" field goal contest. Each make was worth a point. Even for the White team. Good point, tho.
2:41
Clay carries for a first down.
2:42
Sherer fakes to Clay and keeps it around the left side for a 10-yard TD run. Welch kicks the extra point. It's now Red 18, White 17.

2:43
[Comment From Drew Grunow]
John Clay is going to be the work horse of the team this year.
2:43
Brendan Kelly with a sack of Tolzien on White's first play. Loss of 8.
2:44
[Comment From gobigred]
Is the #1 offense playing against the #1 defense? Or are they playing against second teamers?
2:44
It's supposed to be #1s against everyone else, but looks like some guys have moved around a bit.
2:45

2:49
Phillips keeps it and scores around the left side from 13 yards out. Welch PAT is good. It's 25-17 Red.
2:50
Jon Budmayr in at QB for the White team.
2:52
White goes three and out after Budmayr's lengthy third-down attempt is beyond the intended receiver.
2:53

Not quite, but he clearly adds the running dimension to the position.
3:17
[Comment From jason]
do you think the qb depth chart right now is looking like sherer, phillips, tolzien, budmayr?
3:17
I'll defer to the coaching staff. They'll have a depth chart out in 10 days or so.
3:24
Second half underway. Clay for seven yards and a completion from Phillips to Jefferson for five yards to start things off.
3:24
[Comment From Joel]
Clay and Brown have looked good and fresh. I've been impressed with his running and getting tough yards.
3:25
Fumbled snap, but the Red team recovers. 3rd and 5.
3:26
Tipped pass, incomplete. 4th down.
3:26

3:32
Nice second-effort run for a first-down by Zach Brown.
3:32
Attendance estimate is 23,500. I can't see from where I am, but have been told much of the west side was full.
3:33
[Comment From Julie]
I thought they weren't supposed to sack the QBs?
3:33
I should have said "sack." They basically blow the whistle when they're in the grasp.
3:34
Phillips with a nice pass to Gilreath for a 41-yard gain and a first down at the 6. Nice look by Phillips.
3:34
[Comment From Brian]
You've got to like what Brown brings every day.
3:34
I agree. He always runs hard, his legs are always moving.
3:34
2nd and goal at the three-yard line.
3:35
Brown to the one.
3:36
Zach for a 1-yard TD run. Hughes extra point is good. Red 39, White 17.
3:38
End of the third quarter. Time for a little "Jump Around." I can tell there isn't anyone in the upper deck because the press box isn't moving and shaking like it usually does during the regular season.
3:41
Time also for another round of "rapid-fire" kicking. Welch hits from 27. Hughes good from 20. Welch good from 37. Hughes misses from 25. Welch wide right from 47. Hughes good from 27. Welch from WAAAAY downtown -- 55 yards and it's GOOD! Hughes good from 32. Score is now Red 42, White 20.
