I wasn’t sure what to expect when I entered the Capitol Theatre in the Overture Center downtown Monday night for the first-ever Buckinghams (watch it here).
UW Athletics has been holding an academic awards banquet for several years, but it had become somewhat routine in its presentation. So, our Academic Services department, headed by assistant athletic director Doug Tiedt, decided to try to liven things up a bit.
Mission accomplished, and then some.
The Buckinghams was flat-out one of the best UW Athletics events I’ve been to in 15 years as an employee here. It was set up Academy Awards-style, complete with a red carpet. Everyone was “dressed to the nines” and the format for the show included not only the presentation of the department’s annual academic awards, but also performances – singing, dancing and music – from several of the student-athletes themselves.
The talent performances were fantastic. It allowed everyone to see that student-athletes are so much more than just what we see on the fields of play. The video of the show, including all of the performances, is worth watching. The dancing (Elijah Hodge and O’Brien Schofield), singing (Alannah McCready and Amy Lewis) and music-playing (Anna Chang) was awesome.
When the event rolls around next spring, be sure to make time to check it out.
