UW vs. Michigan Courtside Blog

Brian Lucas (Assistant Director of Athletic Communications)

10:52 a.m. - I'll blog in Central time today. Be sure to check out Rudy's blog from yesterday's happenings. We just had the national anthem and we've got about 10 minutes until the intros.

11:02 a.m. - I assume a lot of people at work are checking in today. Late-arriving crowd this morning, as is usually expected in the first game of a session. The Michigan State fans that are coming for the later game probably have a dilema. They can either root for us (unlikely) or Michigan (highly unlikely).

11:09 a.m. - Marcus wins the tip. Shot down low for Marcus but he misses. On the other end Brian blocks Harris. Then he finds Marcus down low for two. Sims misses and  ball out off of Michigan. Brian misses a three but Joe hustles so ball out off Michigan. Michael drives the lane but no good. Joe with a steal and and driving layup. Brian called for a foul on Udoh, non-shooting. Sims travels. Good TV shot as Joe takes the ball out right in front of me. Trevon drives in for a lay-up. Udoh with an airball. Greg and J-Bo in for Brian and Joe. Marcus with a great look to Greg down low. Badgers up 8-0 and Michigan calls a TO with 16:19 left.

11:12 a.m. - Mike with a steal and lay-up. Harris knocks down a three to get Michigan on the board. Greg misses down low and then Michigan misses as well. UW with the rebound and Mike and Udoh get tied up, bringing us to a whistle. TV timeout with UW leading 10-3 with 15:06 left.

11:21 a.m. - Our trqainer, Henry Perez-Guerra is wearing a lavender shirt on the bench. Probably looks great in HD. Our favorite sideline announcer, Erin Andrews, is on the game today but unfortunately not sitting in her usual seat. J-Bo misses a three but Michigan misses as well. Greg up big for the rebound. Pop misses a three. Michigan called for an illegal screen. Three second call on UW. Michigan misses a turnaround but J-Bo called for a travel. Michigan ball after the TV timeout. UW leads 22-13 with 3:30 left.

11:47 a.m. - Jim Sorgi and Kirk Penney are in the stands today. One of our managers, Chris, is wearing a pink shirt. He kind of clashes with Henry. Michigan throws it our of bounds but they rule it off Greg. Sims misses a three. Pop fouled shotting a three. He makes all three FTs. Michigan misses but Trevon called for the foul on the rebound. Greg with a big block but Marcus travels. Gibson hits a three. Greg called for the offensive foul. Sims misses but Brian is called for the foul. Sims makes both FTs. J-Bo drives and is fouled. The streak is over as he misses the first but makes the second. Mike with a good defensive play on Harris forces a miss. Mike heaves it as the buzzer sounds but just short. UW leads at halftime 26-18.

11:59 a.m. - At halftime they had a round of basketball musical chairs, where you have to run down, make a basket and then race back to the chairs. Theyh had three UW fans and three Michigan fans. It came down to two UW guys and a Mcihigan guy and in that round, the Michigan guys and one of the UW guys were racing from opposite ends to the same chair. They met at the chair and the UW fan gave him an extra hip, knocking him to the floor. Big applause from the UW fanes.

UW is shooting 41.7 percent from the field but Michigan is just 6-of-28 (.214). Michigan has nine turnovers while UW has eight. The rebounds are even at 18. J-Bo leads UW with seven points while Gibson leads all scorers with eight.

12:09 p.m. - Michigan ball to start. Butch called for a foul on Udoh, his third. Greg in for Brian. Udoh makes both. Mike with a good look to Joe but it won't go. Michigan with a wild shot leads to along pass from Greg to J-Bo, he drives the lane then drops it behind his back to Marcus for a tomahawk jam! Pretty play. TO Michigan with UW leading 35-23 with 14:24 left.

12:24 p.m. - Wright hits a three for Michigan. Mike drives and is fouled going up. He makes both. Pop called for a foul as Merritt drives. He makes both. Marcus drives and misses then he and Joe pinball it but can't get it to go. Michigan misses on there end and Mike is fouled on the drive. J-Bo misses a jumper but Michigan misses a three. 12:52 p.m. - Joe makes both. Sims travels on the other end. I think Michael Flowers is a little upset he didn't get defensive POY because right now Harris has four points on 1-of-11 shooting. UW breaks the press and Joe finds Mike for a lay-up. UW calls TO to get some subs in. Badgers lead 50-34 with 1:32 left.

12:55 p.m. - Now all the reserves are in. Mo misses but Keaton rebounds. Tanner fouled. He makes one. Badgers win 51-34. On to the semis!

10:50 p.m. - Survive and advance, that’s the creedo in March. That’s what happened today. Defensively, as has been the case all year, we turned up the heat. Michigan did not get many uncontested looks. Another constant this season has been the play of Michael Flowers and he was at it again today.

Post-game, a lot of the questions for Mike revolved around him getting passed over for Defensive Player of the Year in the league and Manny Harris scoring 26 points in the teams’ last matchup. He said all the right things about how he tries to do the same things every game. I believe that is true. I also had a feeling before the game that Harris wouldn’t have a very fun day. He finished with four points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Joe also had a very Krabbenhoft-like 12 points. He was 6-of-6 from the foul line, had four offensive boards (and seven overall) and was great defensively.

After the game, Coach Ryan was on live on CBS College Sports TV (formerly CSTV) following the Memphis game. We had to take a cab over to the Westin Hotel. As soon as we get in the cab, Caoch asks the cabbie where he’s from. It ends up that he’s from Tripoli, in Libya but, of course, he lived for a little bit in Wisconsin. He and coach chatted for the entire four-minute ride. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less.

After that, my wife and I met Mike Lucas (no relation) and his wife and Otto and Barb Puls for dinner at St. Elmo’s. As we were leaving the restaurant, we heard that Illinois and Purdue were in overtime. We high-tailed it across the street to RAM to watch the last 45 seconds of OT and see the Illini pull it out. We also watched the first half of Minnesota-Indiana at the Hilton, because our hotel doesn’t have the BTN. Now I’m reduced to getting updates on my trio and the ESPN crawler. Just spent the last 10 minutes trying to figure out what was going on. They just showed that Minnesota won on a buzzer-beater by Blake Hoffarber. Can’t wait to see the highlights.

Tomorrow should be a good one. The only time we won the tourney (2004) we had to go through Michigan State in the semifinal. We only played once this year, a couple weeks ago in Madison. The game is always very intense and it should be no different tomorrow.
